The Blair Center for the Arts is honored to welcome back Anthony Waichulis for a three-day masterclass in advanced representational technique. A celebrated trompe-l’œil still life painter, and one of the most analytically rigorous voices in contemporary realism, Waichulis brings his signature fusion of perceptual science, neuroscience, and classical craft to a program designed for artists who want to refine both vision and execution.
Focus
High Definition Realism (A–Z) 2.0: Calibrate, Construct, Correct offers a deep dive into the perceptual and material challenges that define high-definition painting. Open to both seasoned painters and motivated newcomers, this workshop emphasizes diagnostic thinking and problem-solving (core tenets of the Waichulis curriculum), helping participants identify, interpret, and correct the nuanced obstacles that often stand between intent and visual accuracy.
Over three immersive days, participants will explore how deliberate calibration of materials, processes, and perceptual strategies can yield exceptional precision and coherence in painted imagery. The format combines demonstration, guided practice, and structured troubleshooting sessions tailored to each artist’s level of experience.
Workshop Overview
Day 1: Orientation to materials and the “small-to-big” approach; participants begin their first high-resolution study from supplied references while learning Waichulis’ principles of survey logic (SNAG: Survey, Notan, Anchors, Gradations).
Day 2: Refining surface and image integration; issues like sinking, seams, aggregate irregularities, and “voodoo darkening”, will be addressed. Students connect indirect and alla prima methods to broaden technical fluency.
Day 3: Layer analysis, precision correction, and finishing strategies. The day closes with targeted exercises to strengthen deliberateness and control in high-definition rendering.
