Inspirations: John Berlyn Fernandez

The inspiration for this work is the 1975 film Tommy, directed by Ken Russell and based on The Who’s Rock Opera. My composition directly references the film’s protagonist and its iconic promotional imagery, which depicts a figure deprived of sight, hearing, and speech.

I have adapted this visual concept to explore the modern necessity of self-preservation. In my drawing, the bandages symbolize how individuals often must make themselves “blind, deaf, and mute” to navigate difficult professional or social environments. This visual reference connects the theme of sensory isolation to the modern struggle of surviving in environments that often overlook human feelings.
